Conversion of an old Shellfish Farm Into a Swimming Pool. Tapia de Casariego (Asturias), Spain
The old shellfish farm in Tapia de Casariego (Asturias) used to consist outbuildings on a stepped slope flanked by stone walls.
The essential prupose of the project was to design a bathing area where enviroment and functionality could coexist in harmony.
The outstanding beauty of the surroundings demanded a solution that did not interfere with the wonderful sea views. This meant that railings and other decorative elements could not be used.
The development consists of a decking surface throughout, complementing the existing stone walls. This has resulted in the creation of an enclosed space leading to the bathing area and the cliffs, where the visitor can enjoy the sea views.
The solution: to turn the path into an access point, a place for taking in the views and relaxing. This has been achieved through the use of a single material, extending like a wooden carpet, molded to the existing surface, creating platforms for sunbathing on the lower level close to the bathing area.
The creation of this new space revitalizes a previously deteriorated area, converting it into a leisure space, in a beautyful surrounding. The project has delivered a solution that removes boundaries and creates a space where the viewer can interact with the landscape and the horizon.
